Houston, TX is a city known in Hip-Hop for bringing a a slowed down, syrupy laced and southern sound. In the case of Hollywood Floss, Houston also has a different style of rappers. Sure, we all love the swang and bang that we get from some of Houston’s own but Hollywood Floss brings a sound and stage prescence that is a bit more vibrant and lyrical.
Floss started taking his rap career seriously in 2008 and compares his sound to and early Lupe Fiasco meets Lil Jon. “I feel like I bring a good amount of creativity and honesty with my music, people can easily be creative but not honest in their work.” says Floss. The Houston native has collaborated with Brandun Deshay, Fat Tony and Naledge of Kidz in the Hall. The newer generation of Houston artists all bring something different. There’s artists like Kirko Bangz, The Niceguys and Propain. “Houston’s underground scene has versatility and I just want people from other cities to know that we don’t all sound the same.” adds Floss. “I’m very proud of Houston rap in general, you can’t deny Kirko Bangs success or all the love that A$AP Rocky shows the city.” Floss continues “If I could change anything it would be for the younger generation of fans to appreciate our legends and founding fathers more, if A$AP Rocky can sell out a show here in Houston then so should Lil Keke or Z-Ro.”
Floss lists artist like Sade, Prince and Dom Kennedy as influences. He also looks up to producers like Harry Fraud, Just Blaze and Kanye West. Floss also produces and learned how to use a production software he purchased from a crystal meth dealer at Guitar Center. “The guy at Guitar Center sold me the software and taught me how to use it all for $50.” says Floss.
