[Feature] Rich Flyer: Recognize The Real

By: Kaitlin Balmert

Forget what you know about New York hip hop and meet Brooklyn’s Rich Flyer, a multi-talented artist with a sound all his own. Producing for the likes of Phreshy Duzit and The Underachievers and working on his new album entitled Power, Rich Flyer is a classic in the making. Read on as he talks on his new album, his affiliation with Phreshy Duzit, an upcoming collaboration with Young Money and more.

Your new album Power is coming out this year, what can we expect from that? What was your vision in creating it?

My vision on creating “Power” was based on all the good and bad I’ve been through this year. I hate to use the word classic, but it feels like one, the production is fantastic, the raps are top notch. I did most of the production myself, a lot of heartfelt music.

Do you have any collaborations with other artists or producers in the works?

I got some production on Phreshy Duzit’s project & The Underachievers project. I haven’t really found no producers that match my sound well, so I’ve been handling all of it myself basically. There is a special PHCK$ x YMCMB collab dropping though! I love my verse.

I bump your newest song, The Church, a lot and people are always asking me if it’s Kendrick Lamar; do you get that comparison a lot?

Actually, I haven’t and I’m glad because I want to focus on building and keeping my quality sound, but I am a fan of Kendrick’s work, the best lyricist out in my opinion.

You are Mr. Multi-talented; if you had to choose, what would you consider your favorite; rapping, singing or beat production?
I love all three, I can produce and sing all day but there’s something about rapping, I let most of my emotion out in raps based on how I’m feeling at the moment. So rapping has to be my favorite.

With so much music coming out of New York, what do you think sets you aside from other artists?
I have a different image, sound, production, & lyrics. Everything we are doing is much more musical and raw than what’s going on right now. I love the NY music scene though, I feel like we got a chance to bring it back & keep it here.

Can you tell us about your affiliation with Phreshy Duzit..
We’re like brothers, I’ve learned a lot from him, musically & as a person. I’m positive that he’s the next big thing. I feel like that’s my only competition.

What is one thing Brooklyn has taught you?
How to be strong mentally & physically. Being the fact that I’m 20 years old still chasing my dream, with the support & love from my neighborhood is a big achievement within itself. At the end of the day I want to say, “I made it out the hood.”

What is one thing you wish you could change people’s minds about?
Being more open minded about music. Listeners nowadays are very stubborn when it comes to a style of music they like, they just stay in that lane and its damaging music. I can’t be your Kanye, I can’t be your Jay-Z. I can only be me, Rich Flyer.

Any last words?
Look out for Power, dropping October-November. New video dropping early September. Make sure you go get “The New Religion” by Phreshy Duzit. Neighborhood PHCK$ project coming soon. Big shout out to JENESIS Magazine, we’ll do another one of these interviews after the project drops, things will be a lot different by then. Thank you for all the support every time I drop something, it’s a blessing.
