We’re with the DJ: DJ John John

Los Angeles local, Johnathan “DJ John John” Lacy lives the life as one of most popular young Westcoast DJ’s. There is enough talent in this 21 year old to prove he is not just another “newcomer” to the DJ industry. With his relations to Pushaz Inc star DJ, DJ Mustard, the LA DJ has been able to stay away from being overshadowed by his cousin’s success and build his own landmark as one of So Cal’s best and highly requested DJ.

Fresh off the This is Dom Kennedy Tour,  DJ John John speaks with JENESIS to chop it up about his beginnings, the DJ’s that inspired him, and future power moves. Check out what he says as he tackles our ”We’re With The DJ” Q&A.

What’s on your current playlist?

I section the playlist by parties to fit different spectrums of audiences. It ranges from layback to in-store events to club then personal. I like to vibe with the crowd because I’m very observant (Capricorn).

Layback: Joey Badass-Suspect

In-store Events: Currensy- BBS

Club: Juicy J ft Mac Miller- Spend it all on drugs

Personal: Most recent mixtapes since I always keep my ears to the street

Have any side hu$tles?

Selling illegal substances? lol nah but I have a few since I’m trying not to sell myself short. Usually they are mixtapes and producing beats. Anything that allows me to master my craft.

Favorite album of all-time?

Just one album? Damn the Murder Was the Case soundtrack. It was the peaking point for many rappers. It had Nate Dogg’s “One More Day” and DJ Quik’s “Dollas & Cents”. Guarantee classic.

What DJ inspires you the most and why?

As a DJ you can’t just have ONE DJ that inspires you. I have a few for various reasons. Jazzy Jeff’s took the art of mixing and scratching far making it the basis for DJ’n. Then there is DJ AM who just blended everything together. DJ Drama is my recent favorite because he brought a new element to DJ’n. He became the new face for DJ’s but more importantly becoming a self-established street music DJ.

Craziest DJ booth incident?

Most of them are explicit haha but the funniest I’ll say is performers falling off the stage at clubs. Can’t get any funnier than that shit.

Most requested song that you hate?

Cupid’s shuffle. Fuck that shit lol

1st response in your head to a song requested?

I just consider if this is “do-able”. Always think about what kind of crowd would it work with.

A DJ should NEVER….

Beef with the people at the party and play “Pop That” by YG at a family function lol
