janera solomon, executive director of the Kelly Strayhorn Theater, announces the launch of an incubator for event producers and curators that will be a first in the arts presenting field, and a first for Pittsburgh. KST’s FUTUREMAKERS Lab is a 12-week collaborative incubator, in which participants will focus on refining ideas while taking their project through the phases of innovation, test, and scale. The program runs from April 2017 to June 2017. 8 weeks of immersive training, relationship building, and core project development will be followed by the launch of all FUTUREMAKERS Lab projects in June. Applications are due Friday, March 24 by 11:59pm and can be found online at www.kelly-strayhorn.org
Amplifying KST’s mission as a catalyst for creative expression, the incubator, created by solomon and project director Darrell Kinsel, is the second of a series of programs developed by KST to expand the role of performing arts presenting institutions – to be relevant and responsive to community needs. Participants will be selected by an advisory group, with KST staff and FUTUREMAKERS Lab Director, D.S. Kinsel.
KST will leverage its local and national network of affiliations to produce development opportunities for incubator members. KST believes in the value of event producers and curators in making a neighborhood or city vibrant.
“We are excited to launch this incubator as a new model for fostering creative, community-centered practice and reinforce an initiative to connect diverse creative technology, business, and art on the Ave.” – KST executive director, janera solomon
Are you creative, but don’t necessarily identify as an artist? More and more people find themselves at this crossroad. This sub-group of creative people is often forgotten in the conversation around professional development and the need for a support network. KST is no stranger to creatives, producers, and curators, whom are equally as important to a thriving arts community as the artist making the products and performances we all love! As a way to provide a platform, KST’s FUTUREMAKERS Lab looks to provide a space designed for curators, event producers, and non-traditional practices.
This program will support the development and launch of 4 new projects at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater and/or KST’s Alloy Studios. FUTUREMAKERS Lab will highlight unique local products and services while offering creative entrepreneurs an opportunity to innovate any new or pre-existing idea from their portfolio.
KST believes that diversity of skill, thought, and identity amongst creative entrepreneurs is key to the success of any thriving city. Diverse game-changers from across various industries and disciplines are encouraged to apply to this opportunity.
Applications will be accepted through Friday, March 24 at www.kelly-strayhorn.org
