[Under The Radar] Feature: Dub-O

Article by Tip Hicks (@datz_trizzy)

Cleveland music has risen to its feet with the coming of the rock-ish speed rapper MGK. Now it’s time for fellow EST. 19XX emcee Dub-O to make his entrance after generating buzz last year with his debut mix tape Do I Know You.

The young rapper has hit the streets blazing and got a taste of the bright lights appearing on the vocals of “What I Do” on MGK’s debut album Lace Up and touring with MMG. “I didn’t stay the entire tour but from the time I was there I now know what to expect. It was fun, yet a lot of work.” Musical influences like Chamillionaire and 50 Cent aided Dub while perfecting his delivery of rapping and adding a little singing. The self-described “cool, calm and chill” mix tape features notable tracks like strip club anthem “Paid” and old school caddy riding music “Like This.” My personal favorite is “Chill on 100” because of the legendary sample beat “For the Love of Money” by Bone Thugz-N-Harmony; Dub-O describes the track as the best way to live life, “just chill.” No matter the size of his buzz he stays focused and humble for the long road ahead.

Dub-O kicks a few lines with JENESIS Magazine and tells us the most important tips of touring:

The rap game needs less imitation and more creation
If I could be on any reality TV show, it would be Real Husbands of Cleveland
Ain’t nobody fuckin’ with my b*tch because I don’t have one
If I wasn’t rapping, I would still be working in a factory
I know I made it when I can move my family out the country
Get money and more confidence are two goals I have set for 2013

Describe the influence MGK has had on your hustle and your career:

DUB: He’s a motivation to me because of his dedication and hard work. In the studio and on the stage, we feed off each other’s energy. He’s like my little brother but, when it comes to music and carrying yourself as an artist, I learn a lot from the homie. It’s always a pleasure working with MGK.

What was the most important thing you learned on the road?

DUB: Staying healthy! Stay on top of your game as far as performance as well. You come across a lot of people on tour, network and take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself.
