Who’s Having The Best Year So Far? TDE, Taylor Gang, G.O.O.D. Music, or MMG?
This year has been great in music, so far. Other than the mini soap opera beefs and the wave of ratchet music turning our youth into riot starters, a few teams have been making major marks in the industry. Whether they’ve been working together or competing for the top spot, who do you think is having the best year so far?
TDE (Top Dawg Entertaiment)
The TDE crew took a big step in signing with Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. Kendrick got Dr. Dre focused again by joining him on the radio-pushed single, “Women, Weed, Weather.” Schoolboy Q’s “Habits & Contradictions” has helped him get together his first solo tour. With “Hands on The Wheel” pushing hard with the help of A$AP Rocky, Q announced he will be dropping his album after Kendrick’s via Aftermath/Interscope Records also. Ab-Soul, being the widely most underrated member of the group, released “Control System” which got great reviews and has been picking up solo headlined shows himself.
Taylor Gang
With Wiz Khalifa making great moves year after year since “Kush & OJ” released, he’s been a hard man to miss. Almost everything he touches turns to gold and platinum. His lead single, “Work Hard, Play Hard,” is his recent single to go gold after his lead single with Snoop, “Young, Wild, and Free,” went platinum immediately. Taylor Gang artists Juicy J, Chevy Woods, and Lola Monroe have been releasing consistent records. With the exception of Lola Monroe, all of the Taylor Gang artists have consistently been on tour throughout 2012 while they all gear up for Wiz and Mac Miller’s Under The Influence Tour.
G.O.O.D. Music
We all know the name and when a G.O.O.D. Music track drops, the whole world stops. Though G.O.O.D. Music has been around for a while as an imprint for Kanye West, GLC, Consequence, John Legend, Kid Cudi, and Common, the new signings of Pusha T, Big Sean, CyHi Tha Prynce, Teyana Taylor, Hit Boy, and the on the fence 2Chainz has made them a force you can’t escape. “Mercy” has been this year’s favorite (it also quieted the initial release 2Chainz had with Drake)and the minimalist video is pretty interesting. Add in a beef between Pusha T and Drake/Lil Wayne, Kanye dating Kim K., releasing the Yeezy 2′s, and the “Cruel Summer” film. After “Cruel Summer,” expect releases from Big Sean, Kanye, John Legend, Kid Cudi, Mr. Hudson, and recent signee Q-Tip.
MMG (Maybach Music Group)
Maybach Music Group is rounding up to be the new YMCMB. Signing after signing, MMG has done everything big or at least made it flashy enough that you thought it was important enough to check out. First we had Wale and Meek Mill join the team and rejuvenate their careers and also give Rick Ross more life. Then the signing of underground artist Stalley surprised many as to what direction he would go. Soon a press conference was held about the releases of Rick Ross, Meek Mill, and MMG’s albums coming all in the summer. Now there is “Maybach O” Omarion and most recent signing of Rockie Fresh from Chicago which adds more depth to their lineup than the Miami Heat.
